Best Ever Irish Shepherd’s/ Cottage Pie
With St. Patty’s day just around the corner. Shepherd’s/ or Cottage pie is absolutely your best choice. The rich & creamy mashed potatoes merge beautifully with the saucy ground beef mixture.
Being rich and super tasty, this dish is definitely a crowd-pleaser.
The only difference between Shepherd’s pie & cottage pie lies in the type of meat. So you can simply use this recipe & swap the ground beef for ground lamb if you wanna prepare Shepherd’s pie.

Materials
Mashed potatoes
- 3 Large potatoes
- 1 cup Skimmed milk warm
- 1 tbsp Butter
Ground Beef mixture
- 750 g Lean ground beef
- 1 Onion chopped
- 2 Garlic cloves minced
- 400 g Frozen Peas & carrots thawed
- Salt
- Pepper
- 7 Spices mix
Ground beef mixture sauce
- 1½ cup Water
- 1 tbsp wholemeal flour
- 2 tbsp Greek yogurt
- 2 tbsp Soy sauce
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- Salt
- Pepper
- Nutmeg
Egg wash
- 1 Egg beaten
- 1 tbsp Water
Instructions
- Place potatoes in a large pot of water & bring to boil. Cook until tender.
Preparing the ground Beef
- Sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic in a greased saucepan, stirring occasionally till tender.
- Add the minced beef, salt, pepper and 7 spices to the pan. Stir the meat occasionally for 10 minutes, making sure all sides are browned.
- After the ground beef is cooked, add the peas and carrots. Stir for 5 minutes.
Preparing the sauce
- Dissolve the flour in water.In a pan over medium heat, add all the sauce ingredients, stirring well until the sauce thickens.
- Add the beef mixture into the sauce & give it a good stir. Set aside.
Preparing the mashed potatoes
- Using a potato ricer, press the cooked potato through the ricer.
- Add the milk & butter to the mashed potatoes. Whisk until creamy.
Assembling the pie
- Preheat the oven to 200C.Spread the ground beef filling in a baking dish.
- Pipe the potato mixture over the beef mixture.
- Brush the potatoes lightly with egg wash.
- Bake in the preheated oven for around 30 minutes until golden brown.Serve & enjoy!
