Light and Tasty Egyptian Hawawshi (Arayes)
Hawawshi is from the most popular traditional Egyptian street foods. it is a crunchy pita sandwich stuffed with a flavorful mixture of minced meat, vegetables, and various spices. A combination that will make you find delight in every bite. I prepared a lighter version of the traditional recipe with simple swaps, but without any sacrifice of the taste.
There is no doubt that this recipe will satisfy your street food cravings guilt-free.

- 8 Whole wheat pita bread
- 1 kg Lean minced beef
- 1 Large onion finely grated
- 1 Tomato finely chopped
- 1 Pepper finely chopped
- 1 Chilli pepper finely chopped
- 2 tbsp Parsley finely chopped
- 1 tbsp Vinegar
- 1 Garlic clove minced
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Pepper
- 1 tsp 7 Spice mix
- ¼ tsp Nutmeg grated
- ½ tsp Paprika
- 1 tbsp Olive oil
- 1 tbsp Butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200°C.In a large bowl, add the minced beef, onion, tomato, peppers and parsley and all the spices. Mix well.
- Using a sharp knife, cut open each pita halfway round creating a pocket.
- Mix the butter and olive oil together. Brush the inside of each sandwich.
- Add 2 tbsp of the meat mix and press down to fill out the entire base of the pita.
- Brush the front and Back of the sandwich.
- Wrap each sandwich with parchment paper, making sure all sides are covered.
- Place the wrapped sandwiches on the baking sheet.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the meat is fully cooked through. Remove the parchment paper and cook for another 10 minutes until the pita is crispy on both sides.
- Serve with healthy garlic sauce, jalapenos and tomato garlic salad.
